Anglo American is a multinational mining company with a primary listing on the London Stock Exchange and a secondary listing on the JSE. Anglo American employs approximately 69,000 people in South Africa.1
Anglo American mines platinum, iron ore and coal in South Africa. It also owns 85% of diamond mining company De Beers.
The company’s platinum business (Anglo American Platinum Limited) is the leading producer of platinum world-wide.2 This operation has been dealt with separately under the ‘Anglo American Platinum Limited’ section of this report.
Anglo American’s iron ore business consists primarily of a 69.7% shareholding in Kumba Iron Ore Limited. This operation has also been dealt with separately under the ‘Kumba Iron Ore’ section of this report.
Anglo American’s thermal coal business wholly owns and operates seven mines in South Africa – Goedehoop, Greenside, Kleinkopje, Landau, New Denmark, Isibonelo and New Vaal – and has a 73% shareholding in Anglo American Inyosi Coal (AAIC). Included in the AAIC business is the double-staged Phola coal washing plant, a 50:50 joint venture with BHP Billiton Energy Coal South Africa (BECSA). Anglo American also has a 50% interest in Mafube, a joint venture with South African diversified resources group Exxaro.3
