Company overview

Sibanye Gold is one of the world’s ten largest gold producers and operates solely in South Africa, with listings on the JSE and the NYSE.1 It was formed in 2013 when the majority of its constituent operations were unbundled from Gold Fields.2

Sibanye has four underground and surface gold operations, and operates processing facilities as well as mines. The Cooke (mining), Driefontein (mining and processing) and Kloof (mining and processing) operations are based in the West Witwatersrand region, and the Beatrix Operation (mining) is located in the southern Free State.3

Sibanye also has a number of ‘organic projects’, including the West Rand Tailings Retreatment Project (Far West Rand), the Burnstone project (South Rand of Gauteng province) and the Beisa North, Beisa South, Bloemhoek, De Bron-Merriespruit, Hakkies and Robijn projects (Free State). It also holds a 33% interest in Rand Refinery (Pty) Ltd.4

In September 2015, Sibanye announced its proposed acquisition of Anglo American Platinum Limited’s Rustenburg Operations.5 In March 2016, Sibanye also announced that it had finalised its acquisition of all of the shares in Aquarius Platinum Limited.6

As at 31 December 2015, Sibanye employed a total of 46,269 people – 86% full-time permanent employees and 14% full-time contractors.7
